As a midwifery lecturer at Griffith University I have recently become involved in the world of blended learning and really want to expand my knowledge in this exciting area.
I have spent too long avoiding everything virtual and am ready to give it a go....wish me look

  2. Wow! This is soooo cool. I am very impressed. There is a growing number of midwives doing this course so I am sure you'll enjoy catching up with them.

We'll be playing with Skype in a few weeks time, but if you want to practice before hand, let me know. Sarah :)

PS: I think you need to reduce your photo. Carolyn Hastie is the one to talk to about blogging...she's just done a heap of work on her blog so will be able to help you out, I am sure: http://thinkbirth.blogspot.com/

  3. I think this is going to be very challenging for me. I have spent 20 mins trying to join participant list and still seem to have ended up in the wrong place. 12/10 for trying though !

  4. @Mary There is a lot to take in, especially now over the first couple of weeks. And Wikieducator is not easy to work out. But you're doing great...just give it a go and have fun...it doesn't matter if things are not perfect as long as you give things a go. cheers Sarah

  5. Hi Mary,
Echo Sarah - just have a go and a play. You can't break anything, and I'm sure the rest of the students will be supportive.
    Cheers,
    Chris

  6. Hello Mary,
Nice to have you here. I guess this is your first time on this course and first experience using blog. You will find this interesting and as a midwife you could use your newly created blog to keep record of activities around your roles in your profession. So your blog will not have to be abandoned after this course.
    Look forward to your posts.

  7. Hi everyone....thanks for your support. I enjoyed the first group meeting tonight I am just sorry I had to leave early I think I represent many of my friends and colleagues who just think this is all too hard so don't bother to try but only last week the midwifery and birth consumer networks of Queensland proved how valuable social networking is as a tool. We heard at 5 pm that the birth centre on the Gold coast had been closed and by 8pm had the face book page up and running announcing the rally the next morning. Using FB email and other media we managed to get 300 + people to the rally and by 7pm that night it had reopened.
My challenge over the week is to visit other blogs of course members and try to work out how to leave a message

  9. @mary you have demonstrated the force of social media to keep your birth centre open. Fantastic. Obama had a powerful force behind his campaign also.

  11. Hi Mary,
Great to be joining you in blogland. I've just come from Jade's page and wonder if I need a nursing registration before proceeding here? :-) A wonderful story about Facebook and the rally. And Skype's a piece of cake. I lived in Tokyo for years and rang my kids in NZ regularly, the phone bill was rarely under $500 a month. Then along came Skype and goodbye phone bill. The real benefit was seeing the family live - almost like being with them. You'll love it.

  12. Hi Mary, great to see you here! The success of the Birth Centre action is very impressive and indicative of what is possible with social media. I look forward to sharing the journey with you. This course is going to be such fun. warmly, Carolyn

  13. Lots of Midwifes and people from the East Coast Australia in FO2010.

For myself, I'm working on improving further outcomes for kids using the power of web 2.0. Great facebook campaign story about the GC Birth Centre. In a past life, while living on the Coast, I played a small part in getting the government to commit to an election promise to fund it. Much more credit to the local women who worked for a long time on the campaign than for my little but timely involvement. One of those Right Time Right Place momements. Sounds a good description of the recent advocacy on Facebook.
